Bensalem, PA – Counterspy, fresh off of a fourth-place effort in the Gulfstream Park Mile (GII), returned to his home track a winner on Wednesday with a front-running romp over an accomplished group of five rivals in the day’s feature, an allowance/optional claiming race.

The five-year-old gelded son of Gun Runner broke alertly and went right to the lead under jockey Mychel Sanchez. From there, he repelled all rivals and drew off comfortably to win by 2 ¼ lengths. It was the seventh career victory for gelding who is trained by Robert Mosco and owned by Jack Armstrong.

It was the second winner of the day for Sanchez who tops the jockey standings.

"Counterspy has just been such a cool horse from day one," said Sanchez. "He loves the freedom of running and competition. He loves to race so much, he can be really strong during morning workouts but at race time, he acts really classy. He is really amazing."

On Tuesday, Alani went gate to wire in Tuesday’s featured race.

Trained by Michael Moore, regular rider Franke Pennington had retained the mount after the filly was claimed for $75,000 in December. The four-year-old daughter of Competitive Edge broke alertly and went directly to the lead. From there, she controlled the pace through opening fractions of :23.23 and :47.23 before drawing off handily to earn her third career victory. Éclair Blanc closed for second and her stablemate, Mary Q, rounded out the trifecta.

“She was very sharp,” said Pennington. “She was in the bit the whole way and then in the stretch she responded to me very nicely.”

On Monday at Parx, Bottles won his third straight race for trainer Michael Pino. The sophomore son of Liam’s Map set the pace in the one-mile contest and was clear to win by 2 ¼ lengths. He was claimed out of that winning performance by Felissa Dunn.
